About Courteous Canine

The trainers at Courteous Canine LLC are supervised by Karen Perusek, CDBC, CPDT-KA who has a masters Applied Behavior Analysis (methods of changing socially important behavior in real life settings) with a concentration in canine behavior at Simmons College in Boston MA.

Many of our trainers are members of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. All of our trainers who are employed by Courteous Canine are working towards the Certification of Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT-KA) a comprehensive psychometrically sound (independent of any training school) exam evaluating the trainer knowledge of learning theory, husbandry, canine ethology, classroom management and human teaching techniques. Eligibility for this test requires a minimum of 300 hours as a lead trainer and references from a veterinarian, colleague and a client.

Karen PerusekDog trainer Karen Perusek, CPDT-KA, CDBC. Owner of Courteous Canine with her three dogs

Karen holds a Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Simmons College and completed her mentor hours at Boston MSPCA’s Behavior Department.

Karen Perusek is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) , a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) , a Pet Partner Evaluator , an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen and STAR Puppy Evaluator , a professional member of the Association for Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) , and an Authorized Mentor Trainer for Animal Behavior College. She also has a Citation in Animal Cognition from Harvard University Extension School, and regularly attends seminars with the best instructors and theorists in the dog training field, including Dr. Ian Dunbar, Patricia McConnell, Susan Garrett, Kathy Sdao, and John Rogerson.

Originally a high school special education teacher working with behaviorally disordered adolescents, Karen switched to professional dog training in 2006. She trained extensively under Jim Barry of Reston Dog Training, better known as the RI Dog Guy.

Originally a veterinarian assistant, Karen switched to dog training a decade ago. Between her and her staff of six, Courteous Canine, LLC provides private and group training to Rhode Island, and southeastern Connecticut.

When she isn’t busy, Karen relaxes with her husband Jason, her retired Golden Retriever siblings Halle, Rosco, her rescued Pomeranian, Grace, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Porter, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

Kate Fantoli, CPDT-KADog trainer, Kate Fantail, CPDT-KA with her two dogs

Kate Fantoli is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA). Certified American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen & S.T.A.R. Puppy Evaluator & Certified Canine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) Evaluator. Kate joined Courteous Canine in 2009 and is a lead instructor teaching Puppy Kindergarten, Focused Puppy, Adult Manners, Touching Tails, Feisty Fido as well as some Agility & K9 Nosework classes. Kate has attended the Dog Training Instructor-Training Course by Dogs Of Course, receiving instruction from Pia Silvani and Sue Sternberg. She regularly attends continuing education events with “top dogs” in the field, including Dr. Nick Dodman, Dr. Alice Moon-Fanelli, Victoria Stillwell & Bob Bailey.

Kate is a volunteer for Beagles of New England States (B.O.N.E.S) & also volunteers at a local animal shelter. She is a Professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers and hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Roger Williams University. Additionally, Kate is also a professional dog walker and pet sitter and owner of Bark At The Moon Dog Walking & Pet Care.

Kate and her husband, Jeff are owned by two dogs, Abby, a beagle/spaniel mix and Jack, a hound mix. Abby & Jack are both AKC Canine Good Citizens who enjoy K9 Nosework. Jack is also a Registered Therapy dog with Pet Partners, formally known as Delta Society.

Celeste Diamantinidog trainer, Celeste Diamantini, CPDT-KA, CTDI with her dog

Celeste joined the staff of Courteous Canine in December 2010. She has trained her pets in obedience, agility, rally, nose work, tracking, and tricks. She was certified in 2010 as a dog and shelter trainer through the Animal Behavior College, received her CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed) in 2014 and received her Certified Trick Dog Instructor (CTDI) in 2016. A retired engineer, she brings organization, practical methodology and leadership skills to her training classes.

Lisa CassidyDog trainer Lisa Cassidy

A Lisa is a graduate of Animal Behavior College, Lisa joined the team of Courteous Canine in 2015. Growing up, her family had at least one dog most of her life. After being adopted by Zeus, a 10 month old lab/rottie mix who had a rough life, Lisa realized her childhood dream needed to become a reality. Zeus needed a great deal of patience and understanding to get over his fears.

Lisa graduated from New England Institute of Technology's Surgical Technology program in 1999 and began working as an OR Scrub tech. In 2005 she graduated as Registered Nurse from CCRI. Lisa is an OR nurse at a local hospital where she has worked for 17 years. She enjoys hiking, camping, and dabbles in homemade wine and beer brewing. Lisa has a calm demeanor, patience, good organizational skills, and a great love for animals which make her an asset as a trainer.

Ed Johnson

Ed is a native Rhode Islander born and raised in Cranston RI and a retired Veteran of the Air Force. Ed’s love for his two German Shepard’s Ellie and Lilly, brought him on board to help educate pet owners in our classes. Ed is currently an assistant trainer in our Puppy Kindergarten, Focused Puppy and Canine Essential Adult Dog Training Class.

Marta San Martino

Marta is active volunteer with several local animal rescues and dreams of opening her own rescue one day. She teaches our Puppy Kindergarten, Focused Puppy, Canine Essentials Adult Dog Training, and assists in other classes. As a experienced child care provider, Marta brings her never ending patience and organization to her classes. It was the adoption of her troubled rescue dog, Orchid, that inspired her to take formal dog training classes and learn clicker training.

Jacqui DiCicco

Office Manager & Assistant Trainer

Jacqui is the owner of the Coastal Canine in Bristol, Rhode Island and office manager of Courteous Canine LLC. She started her pet care business in 2014 in Boston, providing in-home services. As client list grew it became necessary to find a space so she could offer boarding and doggy daycare. After falling in love with Bristol's charm, she hired a contractor to design a rustic, coastal and homey theme where services such as doggy daycare, overnight lodging in coastal cottages, and training are offered. After moving to Bristol, she still provides service to her Boston clients at Coastal Canine. Jacqui is in pursuit of her CPDT-KA certification, look for her assisting in classes offered by Courteous Canine at Coastal Canine. She holds a degree in Sociology from Portland State University and is passionate about animal rescue, the environment and social issues.
