Intro to Therapy Work

Class Description: Class Description: Class Description: Prepare for Real-World Therapy Work 

You’ll learn what makes a good animal therapy team, about the different animal- assisted therapy program options, and what’s required for participation. Your dog will learn to relax around people using medical equipment such as walkers, canes, and crutches, and to be secure in the many social and environmental challenges therapy dogs need to take in stride, such as meeting and being touched by strangers

You and your dog will be prepared for the elements of both AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test (required by many therapy programs) and the Pet Partner Team Evaluation.

The first week of class is for people only.
The CGC Test will be offered on week seven of the class. If your dog has a CGC than you can do the CGCA test.
The Pet Partner Team Evaluation will be offered on week eight.

  • Your dog will be more relaxed around unfamiliar objects and people

  • Your dog can achieve an AKC CGC title, which is recognized as a proof of good character for many home insurance and neighborhood organizations

  • Your dog can achieve a Pet Partner title, which is the first step to getting involved in the rewarding and essential work of animal-assisted therapy.

Dogs of all breeds

Owners who are considering volunteering in therapy programs or want to achieve CGC title and/or take the Pet Partner evaluation.

Dog must be one year old and not eating a raw protein diet for PetPartners. 

what are the prerequisites for this class? What prerequisites does this class have?

All dogs must be current on vaccinations and have negitive fecal before the first class. If you have not previously been registered with Pet Partners, you must take the Handlers course offered through Pet Partners either online or in person before you are evaluated. Dogs registered for this class should be able to complete basic commands (sit, down, loose leash walking, etc.) without owners holding a treat in their hand. Reinforcing behaviors with a food reward after the behavior is fine for dogs in the class.

Class meets for eight consecutive weeks, including six class sessions and two private evaluation sessions.

Clicks and Tricks™

Class Description: Class Description: Trick Training for Therapy and Fun

Nothing breaks the ice faster at a therapy visit - or charms a shy child better - than a dog who wows with fun and entertaining tricks. And tricks are a great way to build serious training skills as you help your dog understand the “training game” and learn all kinds of behaviors.

You and your dog will master a repertoire of crowd-pleasing tricks, including wave, shake, high five, roll over, etc. He can earn Trick Dog titles through Do More With Your Dog, too!

You’ll also learn how to use a gentle, motivation-based approach to build any behavior from scratch, put it on verbal cue, and proof it so it works in all settings.

Pet Partner Evaluation
(Therapy)

Class Description: Class Description: Test Description: Testing Readiness for Therapy Work 

This test includes the elements of the Pet Partners Aptitude Test (PPAT) and the Pet Partners Skills Test (PPST). It helps you and your dog to determine if you have the ability, capacity, desire, and potential for participating in animal- assisted therapy.

Skills assessed in this test include accepting a friendly stranger, walking through a crowd, sit and down on command, being petted by several people, and other elements of being a successful and relaxed therapy dog.

If you have not previously been registered with Pet Partners, you must take the Handlers course offered through Pet Partners either online or in person before you are evaluated. There is an additional fee to Pet Partners for the Handlers course and final registration,

AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluation

Class Description: Class Description: Class Description: Canine Good Citizen Title Test 

The AKC CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs, because it lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and other performance events. The CGC title is a great start toward animal-assisted therapy participation as well.

Training for the CGC title will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs of all ages enjoy the exercises and it prepares them for great behavior in crowds, with friendly strangers, and in real-world situations.

  • As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you’ll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog.

  • Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with. They respond well to household routines and have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs

AKC Community Canine Evaluation

Class Description: Class Description: Community Good Citizen Skills

AKC advanced Canine Good Citizen testing asks that the dog demonstrate CGC skills and beyond in a variety of real-world settings.

Skills required for the CGCA include:

  • Sit, stand, or lie down and wait under control
  • Walk on a loose lead in a natural situation
  • Walk on a loose lead through a crowd
  • Ignore distractions
  • Sit and stay in a small group
  • Allow a friendly stranger carrying something to approach
  • Leave it with food
  • Sit or down and stay at a distance, then recall with distractions Enter a doorway or passageway under control and without crowding

  • Your dog can achieve a CGCA title

  • Your dog will demonstrate real-world behaviors, such as door manners and friendly crowd interaction

  • Evaluations for the CGCA builds valuable skills, such as ignoring distractions, tolerating noises, crossing the street safely, etc.

Dogs of all breeds and ages who have completed advanced CGCU or Community Canine training.

All dogs must have the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) title.

AKC Urban Canine Evaluation

Class Description: Class Description: Class Description: Going Beyond Good Citizen Skills 

AKC advanced Canine Good Citizen testing requires that the dog demonstrate CGC skills and beyond in a variety of real-world settings.

Skills required for the CGCU include:

  • Exit/enter a doorway with no pulling or crowding
  • Walk through a crowd on a busy sidewalk
  • Ignore city distractions: horns, sirens, moving objects, various surfaces
  • Cross the street under control
  • Tolerate a friendly stranger carrying something
  • Walk under control into a dog-friendly public building
  • Navigate stairs, steps, or elevator under control
  • Use transportation such as a car or subway

  • Your dog can achieve a CGCU title

  • Your dog will demonstrate real-world behaviors, such as door manners and friendly crowd interaction

  • Training for the CGCU builds valuable skills, such as ignoring distractions, tolerating noises, crossing the street safely, etc.

Dogs of all breeds and ages who have completed advanced CGCU or Community Canine training.

All dogs must have the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) title.
