Unleashed! Day Camp

Unleashed! Dog Day Out
The Unleashed! Day Camp was founded to meet an unmet need.  Facilities in the area did not meet our clients’ requirements for a safe facility where their dogs could learn and play. We are meeting that need with a program offers integrative care to our canine campers with  focus on their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

The safety and wellbeing of our canine campers are our top priorities in all decisions we make. Physical safety is of paramount importance, as are the emotional and mental wellbeing of the canine campers in our care. Our personalized care helps to ensure that our campers leave behaviorally and emotionally better than when they arrive.

We take great pride in providing a safe, clean environment for your canine in which to socialize and play. Dog lovers ourselves, offer a individualized care and attention throughout the day because we recognize that everyone and every dog is different.

Why do we evaluate dogs prior to accepting them into our program?
During our first meeting we evaluate your dogs sociability with our staff, our campers and comfort at our facility. We want to get to know your pet and your preferences so that we can create an experience that is great for them. We will conduct a through assessment to find out what your dog will really loves and then we rotate those activities into your dog’s daily stay here. We have a wide range of activities including fetch, play time with friends, swim time (pool or in the Pawtuxet River), nature sniff hikes, walks on the bike path, massage, tug time, training options include, manners, trick training, rally, agility, and scent work.

Activities and enrichment are planned with our holistic approach to meeting your dogs needs in mind. We believe that the campers in our care:

  • Do not experience hunger or thirst. Fresh, clean water is always available, and we provide nutritionally balanced snacks during training and rest periods.
  • Are always comfortable. Our cabins provide a comfortable opportunity to get quality rest while in our care. We have an individual cabin for each dog in our care.
  • Are free of pain, injury and disease. We carefully evaluate all dogs prior to accepting them into our program and also re-evaluate all dogs in our program quarterly. Our day camp has some of the most stringent health policies in the state.
  • Are free to express normal behavior. Our camp is located in a rural setting that allows our campers to enjoy time indoors, and outdoors, in an environment in which dogs thrive. Many problem dog behaviors occur because dogs do not get enough exercise, mental stimulation and live in environments that stress their natural needs.
  • Are free of fear and distress. Our evaluation process determines whether your dog is comfortable in our camp environment, and our training helps to enhance his or her feelings of safety. We conduct a assessment of your dogs preferences so that we can plan a day of activities that your camp will love! Our trained staff provides consistent supervision to our campers.

Why do we require a weekly visit?
We require a minimum of one day per week attendance at our Unleashed! Day Camp. Consistent attendance reduces canine campers’ stress levels, and helps to foster personal relationships with our camp counselors as they progress with their training. We enjoy having families join our community and consistent contact ensures a positive relationship as we partner with you in caring for your canine.

How are we different from “daycare”?
Our campers are offered off leash socialization experiences in small groups and are always supervised by a trained camp counselor who is physically present with the campers. Campers are hand selected into small groups based on their size, personalities and play styles.

We offer:

  • Higher quality of play, despite shorter periods of play time
  • Higher quality rest which dogs need to be emotionally healthy
  • Our low camper to staff ratio maintains safety from the possible fall out of large-group over arousal

What makes us different?

The dogs and trainers make us differentOur Unleashed! Day Camp program is designed and implemented by Karen Perusek. Karen holds a Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Simmons College and completed her mentor hours at Boston MSPCA’s Behavior Department.

Karen Perusek is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) , a Pet Partner Evaluator , an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen and STAR Puppy Evaluator, a professional member of the Association for Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) , and an Authorized Mentor Trainer for Animal Behavior College. She also has a Citation in Animal Cognition from Harvard University Extension School.

Our camp counselors bring with them a passion for dogs and a variety of skills. When they join our staff they participate in a two-week in house training program and complete Pet and Human First Aid Training.

We are all constantly learning, and have a commitment to ongoing professional education.

Why do we offer scheduled rest, times through the day?

We believe that “play all day” builds non-stop or too-tired dogs. Dogs can get overtired and over stimulated by playing all day without adequate rest. Our schedule offers campers shorter, higher energy play times balanced with rest times, much like a human child’s nursery school. Rest periods are vital and allow campers to follow the play/rest schedule of real lifeThey also help campers learn how to settle down and relax. Our rest times will support campers with a much-needed break before their next activity and they will still go home tired. Our campers rest in individual cabins, outfitted with Kuranda(TM) elevated cots, and cozy fleece beds. Campers are offered lunch or snacks during rest periods; fresh water is always available in their cabins.

We do not believe that exhaustion is a measure of success for off-leash play. For more information please download Article From Dog Gurus

This program is for dogs that attend on an on-going basis. Individual training is part of the ongoing enrichment of your canine camper. Campers that require an intensive training program should consider our Puppy Preschool or K9 to 5 Day Training Program.
